  6.                       Pro-43 Modification
  7.  
  8. Note: It is not lawful to monitor cellular or conventional
  9. mobile telephone conversations.  This is just to restore the
  10. Pro-43 to it's original capabilitys produced by the Pro-43's
  11. microprocessor.
  12.  
  13. The following procedure requires familiarity with microcircuit 
  14. soldering and will void your warranty.
  15.  
  16. TOOLS NEEDED: Fine point,low power soldering pencil; soler wick
  17.               or  a desoldering tool; pointed awl; hemostats or
  18.               pointed tweezers; small phillips; solder
  19.  
  20.  
  21. (1)  Remove the battery, antennna and back cover (held in place
  22.      by four screws).
  23.  
  24. (2)  Remove the six screws holding the top circuit board in 
  25.      place. Carefully unsolder the two antenna connections from
  26.      the board. Bend the antenna ground tab fully up from the
  27.      board. Carefully lift the board, unplugging the black
  28.      connector at its base, and lay the board out of the way
  29.      on its bundle of colored wires.
  30.  
  31. (3)  Remove the two screws from the next board and lift it,
  32.      carefully unplugging the white connector at the bottom
  33.      of the board. Lift it up and lay it aside on its brown 
  34.      wire (which can be unplugged if necessary).

  36. (4)  Unsolder and remove the metal shield from the final board
  37.      revealing the microprocessor; note the row of diodes
  38.      labelled D1-D5 above it.  Only D1, D2, and D4 are present;
  39.      assisted by a pointed tool, unsolder and remove D4, the
  40.      lone diode (this restores cellular frequencies which will
  41.      be searched in 30 Khz steps).

  43. (5)  Resolder the removed diode carefully into postion D3 to
  44.      extend low band coverage to 88Mhz.
  45.  
  46. (6)  Reassemble the boards, paying particular attention to the
  47.      alignment of the plugs. Test the radio by entering any
  48.      frequency between 870 and 890 Mhz and 51-88 Mhz.
